“But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”  Luke 18:16-17 (ESV)

Children are welcomed and valued at the Church of the Ascension. We believe they are a gift from God and we want to support parents as they seek to raise their children to love God and know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

Children participate in worship at Ascension as helpers around the altar, in a children’s time during the service, and through guidance from their parents using the worship booklets.

Bible-based Sunday School classes are held during a part of the service, taught by trained teachers who work with parents to teach children about the love of God.

Communion classes are available for children and parents who wish preparation to better understand what Holy Communion means for them as a family. As well, baptism is available both for infants and older children.

On request, special classes and materials will be arranged for older children coming to baptism.

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)

Youth Confirmation classes occur from time to time. Some members of this group also serve at the altar during Sunday worship. Youth are encouraged to take their part in several parish programs such as: music, reading scripture, set-up, and greeters.

Marriage preparation is offered by the Rector and Pastoral Team.

Courses to enrich marriage and family life are often available through partnering churches and agencies. Please contact the Rector for current resources, or for referrals to helpful counselling agencies.

Order of the Daughters of the Holy Cross

Ascension hosts a Chapter of the Daughters of the Holy Cross. This is a lay order for women committed to study, prayer, evangelism and service. They meet regularly to support one another in their spiritual journeys. Readers & Intercessors

Lay members of our community have key roles during worship. A rotation of parishioners reads from scripture during worship, and others lead the congregation each service in “prayers of intercession.”

Sides People & Altar Guild

We celebrate communion every Sunday at the church of the Ascension, and this requires a little bit of coordination. Our “sides people” assist during the offertory and communion to make sure that regular parishioners and visitors know how to participate, and to assist and guide people during communion.

Our small “altar guild” prepares and cleans the various vessels and materials used during communion, and ensures that our worship space looks appropriate for worship.

About Confirmation

Adult Confirmation classes are held for those who would like to study the Christian faith, and prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. In Confirmation, the Bishop lays hands on the head of each confirmand, praying for the sealing gift of the Holy Spirit. It is a special opportunity to renew Baptismal promises, profess faith, and celebrate belonging to the Anglican Communion and the wider Christian family.
